Porteño Tower Virreyes Restaurant
Porteño can be anyone who lives in Buenos Aires, but also anyone who has been part of its history.Porteño was born in the 70s and is in his early 40s. He is the grandson of Italian and Spanish immigrants and he embraced the best of each culture, blending it with the Argentine interpretation of European immigrant culture. He was born in the neighborhood of Almagro, accustomed to the large Sunday tables where a crowded table of uncles, cousins, siblings, and friends enjoyed the glorious Sunday barbecues prepared by his grandfather. His grandfather was a master of the grill. The grill was always filled with the great Argentine cuts such as the tira de asado, the tenderloin, and the skirt steak. It was always accompanied by chorizos, morcillas, chinchulines, riñoncitos, and mollejas, all bathed in homemade creole sauce and chimichurri. On rainy Sundays, it was customary for his grandmother, Vicenta, who had fled from the war in Genoa, Italy, to make large quantities of fresh pasta with abundant pomodoro sauce, basil, meatballs, and fresh parmesan cheese. His other grandmother, Teresa, the Spaniard, always received him with a large potato tortilla, with onions of course, and she claimed she used 8 eggs and just the right amount of salt. No one could ever be sure if the recipe was exact because she always made it secretly so no one could steal the recipe. The memory of the soda siphon mixed with wine, cooled with ice in the summer, was as indelible in Porteño's life as soccer, which had a leading role. His family was divided between River and Boca, which he was very passionate about, especially during the intense discussions about soccer and politics during the long after-dinner conversations where agreement was never reached. 80s television marked his life with great personalities of the time such as Olmedo and Porcel, Carlitos Bala, or Tato Bores. His biggest idol was Diego, he saw Argentina become champion in Mexico 86 and he still remembers it as if it were yesterday. His grandfather Renato took him to see Carlos Monzón when he won the championship belt at the Luna Park in an epic fight that he will never forget. He remembers seeing his father on Saturday afternoons in his favorite armchair reading Cortázar, and his face lights up when he remembers Les Luthiers at one of the theaters on the famous Corrientes Avenue with his parents. Today, our Porteño is a man of the world, who has traveled enough. He enjoys Sunday barbecues as much as he did as a child, and also loves good pasta on rainy days, but now he makes the pasta himself and makes sure that the meat comes from free-grazing cows. He no longer drinks wine with soda and ice, but instead travels to Mendoza whenever he can to fully indulge in one of his great passions: Mendoza wine. He still has his complete collection of Mafalda and he hasn't forgotten about Clemente. Soccer, theater, music, family, and friends continue to be his greatest passions. Porteño is a gourmet, lover of good food, barbecue, fine wine, family, and friends, but he can also be anyone who is part of our new history.
